Handicap needs awareness

Filed under: Other, Sites, Warnings — Admin @ 11:22 pm

Handicap needs awareness

I would like to raise people’s awareness of handicap scooters needs around the Laboratory workplace. People on crutches, scooters and wheelchairs have some different needs than the ambulatory. I am the first to admit that when I was ambulatory I was unaware of the environment around me in these terms. However, now that I am in a wheelchair, I would like to share with my co-workers some needs and easy-to-do things for people around the Lab.
Doors are a big issue. People in power wheelchairs, scooters etc., need to place themselves to the side of the door to open it. Objects such as trash cans, tables and chairs placed next to the door result in a situation where a disabled person cannot open the door. Please make sure that a 3-foot-wide space is available between the side of the door that opens and any object placed along the wall.
Another issue is bathrooms. If there are multiple stalls available please do not choose the wheelchair accessible stall if you do not need it. It is frustrating and potentially unpleasant to have to wait for the bathroom stall because it is occupied when three other stalls are available.
Wheelchairs, scooters and crutches require more maneuvering room than just the typical human body. Objects piled in hallways can create impassible situations. Imagine not being able to go to a meeting or your office because the hallway was blocked and there was no way around.
Even though it seems like sitting in a wheelchair or scooter requires no effort, disabled people are often plagued by fatigue. And, little tasks such as opening doors can require a great deal of effort. Think about how we would feel to go about the day with a bungee cord around our legs and arms.
I want to thank people for spending an extra second to make life more normal for people who are disabled.

Credit Card Companies

Most building business credit card companies send mail to your home or office with pre-approved card offers. Although it sounds good, it’s only a marketing scheme for saying “We’ve noticed you but you need to pass an additional test”. That’s why the envelope comes with a proper business line of credit card application.

Hand-rim wheelchair propulsion capacity during rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury

Filed under: Other, Sites, Warnings — Admin @ 1:30 pm

Hand-rim wheelchair propulsion capacity during rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury

This paper describes the course of power wheelchairs and handicap scooters propulsion capacity (WPC) during rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) and its relationship with personal and injury characteristics. We investigated 132 subjects with SCI (37 with tetraplegia) at the start of active rehabilitation (t1), 3 months later (t2), and at the end of clinical rehabilitation (t3). WPC was measured as the maximal power output that can be achieved in a maximal wheelchair exercise test on a treadmill. Results were analyzed with the use of generalized estimating equations, with time of measurement, lesion level, motor completeness of the lesion, age, and gender as independent variables. Overall, WPC increased from 30.5 W at t1, to 39.5 W at t2, and 44.2 W at t3. Persons with paraplegia, persons with incomplete lesions, men, and younger persons had higher values for WPC compared with persons with tetraplegia, persons with complete lesions, women, and older persons. Rate of improvement was lower in older persons and women compared with younger persons and men. This paper identifies factors that affect the level (lesion level, completeness of the lesion, age, gender) and rate of improvement (age, gender) of WPC during rehabilitation. These findings should be considered when wheelchair capacity training is applied in SCI rehabilitation.

Filed under: Other, Sites, Warnings — Admin @ 8:55 pm

Win a Job Interview With An Email Cover Letter

Every job hunter wants an interview. It’s the in-person meeting that can make the difference between getting hired and being ignored. To insure your opportunity to win that interview, use an email cover letter. Email is read more often than postal mail and you’re likely to get a faster response with email cover letters, as well. Use standard letter protocol and be sure to study the specifics of the organization you’re targeting. A clear, well-written email cover letter guide is an excellent way to reach the hiring manager of your choice and make your bid for a job interview.

Decision to Start a Home-Based Business

Decision to Start a Home-Based Business

While being in any kind of business has certain basic requirements, a

href=http://www.starscapes.com>money making businesses in 2009 has additional ones.

Self-discipline is very important. Working for others means that many responsibilities are

shared with other employees. Being in business for yourself means you carry the whole load.

Some people don’t want all of the responsibility of licenses, regulations, taxes, insurance,

keeping records, advertising and pricing, etc. Are you willing to take on these

responsibilities?
Depending on the money making opportunities from home, you may

find it very confining, stressful, expensive and physically exhausting. On the other hand,

being on your own can be very stimulating, financially rewarding and satisfying.
A home-based business may cause problems within the family. You need the full support of

spouse, children and others. They need to take you and your business seriously. What help can

you expect or do you need from family members? Use of their money, skills and time often make

the difference between success and failure.
Will you have adequate time to spend with your family? Doing work part-time or postponing

starting a business a few years may enable you to better prepare for starting a business and

allow you more time with your family when they particularly need you.
Lack of planning and insufficient financial backing join poor management as the main reasons

why businesses fail. Improve your odds of success by moving slowly and carefully in starting a

business and you can join the 95 percent of those who succeeded in their first year and the 85

percent who are still in business and doing very well after three years.

Power mobility device provision: understanding Medicare guidelines and advocating for clients

Filed under: Other, Sites, Warnings — Admin @ 9:53 am

Power mobility device provision: understanding Medicare guidelines and advocating for clients

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) issued a new national coverage determination (NCD) for mobility assistive equipment (MAE) including power wheelchairs, handicap scooters in May 2005. CMS then issued a Final Rule in April 2006 that outlined significant changes required for documentation for prescribing MAE. Other insurance providers have since adopted and sometimes modified the NCD criteria and have begun to apply these criteria according to their own interpretations because some of the criteria are vague. In this report, we introduce a case example to show the components of the CMS NCD criteria, what was intended but poorly described in the language, how insurance providers may misinterpret or alter the criteria, and how clinicians can act as advocates.
